It was a trip back in time. I am not sure why it says that it is located in Clayton, NC. It is Shotwell, NC. I learned the history of this area at a landfill meeting that took place several years ago. Residents that lived there for many years shared the history of church and other buildings in the area.
Judy Jonesnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-878297077064353823.post-30291119912894915262020-11-15T14:21:09.151-08:002020-11-15T14:21:09.151-08:00What a beautiful place. While waiting for a trailer we sat under an Oak about 100 yards from the church toward the house known as Windsong. One of the guys felt something under him and dug a little to reveal a cannon ball. Goes in hand with the comment that the Confederates under Gen. Johnston camped there.
Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-878297077064353823.post-16097125535303502642018-04-12T04:26:53.567-07:002018-04-12T04:26:53.567-07:00The door and shutters are now a muted spring green...The door and shutters are now a muted spring green. I have spoken with the owners and the land is being considered for a conservancy for a park upon the death of the current owner, an elderly woman, or turned over to the state historic preservation society. Since the Civil War it was used as a church for the African-American farm workers who ran the plantation. Many are buried in unmarked graves around the church. There are a few who have seen strange lights at night and believe it to be haunted.

I cannot remember the name of the woman who owns the land. I once called her because I was hoping it could be leased for an artists co-op. But there is no electricity or bathroom on the property and it would take a great deal of money to improve it for commercial purposes. I also offered to buy it, but the owners aren't interested in selling.

Many photograph on the steps and sell their photographs. I've photographed for paintings I'm working on. But I would do the proper thing and call on the neighbors, get a phone
number, and make yourself legitimate.Deborah Dunnhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01973113409631783163noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-878297077064353823.post-35224197438214720262015-05-23T16:01:58.412-07:002015-05-23T16:01:58.412-07:00Do people need permission to visit and photograph ...Do people need permission to visit and photograph the area? I resided in Shotwell many years ago, in the Big House (destroyed by arson after I moved away)...and passed the old church many times, walking and driving. I too heard the story about how the bride-to-be explained to her fiancee that she would not come to reside at the property until a church was built there. It was a fine country neighborhood when I lived there...good neighbors - black and white, some historic structures, old cabins, sharecropper's home, folks who received few county services or any assistance, though obviously in need...Sandra GreenAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
